Chilean teachers on strike.
The main demand that has this strike is the payment of the historical debt that has the State with the teachers.
In 1981 was declared the Decree of the Law No. 3.551 which provided a system of pay for the public sector, establishing in article 40 one 'special allocation' not taxable for the dependent teaching staff of the Ministry of education.
To make real the payment of this benefit was fixed the date that should be between 1981 and 1984. However, most of the teachers did not reach to receive the 100 % of the payment; despite of the military Government set January of 1988 as the last deadline for the payment of this right, it was not pay.
This situation has led to teachers throughout
Is this fair?
Yes, because I think that if it was an agreement made by the Government of that time with teachers, which was not respected and Governments that followed have recognized the problem but haven't had the wish nor the intention of solving the problem, it is necessary so that workers carry out their obligations, to be treated with dignity respecting their rights.
Is this strike ethical?
I think indeed it is ethical, since in our country the only way to be heard is through a strike, unfortunately a strake is not the way to solve problems, it is the dialogue. However, I think that if in a dialogue is not possible a consensus it is necessary a strike to enforce the worker rights, because working with dignity means not being looked down on, punishing workers when he/she does not do well his/her job, but also rewarding when the worker does well it. The minimum is starting by paying which corresponds.
What will happen?
The Government will have to answer for the Decree dictated by previous Governments and also the state will have to recognize it, because it is important that teachers, who are responsible for the education of a country, their labor will be appreciated, when this happens will finish this conflict which has last long time.
